The funeral of Cleveland Police officer PC Matthew Blades, who died while on duty in a collision on the A66, will take place in Hartlepool today.
Hartlepool is coming together today to remember Cleveland Police officer PC Matthew Blades, who died while on duty in a collision on the A66.
PC Blades, 37, died alongside his colleague PC Tom Clough, 38, when their marked armed response vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction along the A66 at South Bank during the early hours of Saturday, August 22.
The five men travelling in the Volkswagen also died in the collision.
PC Blades was a devoted husband, loving father of two, dedicated football coach and committed police officer who placed the safety of others before himself.
In a tribute released following his death, Matthew’s wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend and “the most devoted father” to their two young boys.
She said his greatest legacy would always be the love he gave to his family, adding: “Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”
Support for the families of PC Blades and PC Clough has come from across the UK and around the world, with messages, flowers and gestures of kindness offering comfort to their loved ones and Cleveland Police colleagues.
As Hartlepool remembers one of its own, our thoughts remain firmly with Matthew’s wife, his two young boys, his wider family, friends and everyone within Cleveland Police mourning the loss of a deeply valued colleague.
